You have an AED onsite at your facility, but is it properly maintained? The nice thing about AEDs is that they are pretty easy to maintain, and most will do automated daily self-checks on their own. However, because we are dealing with lifesaving devices, you should still have a designated person who is responsible for doing a quick monthly check.
- Check for the green checkmark (only on ZOLL units) or any green light indicator
- Verify that the adult electrodes are within expiration
- If applicable, verify that the pediatric electrodes are within expiration
- Verify that the batteries are within expiration
- Verify that the pads are pre-connected to the input connector and sealed in their package (if adult and pediatric pads are present, adult pads should be preconnected)
- Verify that the rescue accessory kit is available for use (scissors, razor, face shield, etc.)
- Check that the unit is clean, undamaged, and free of excessive wear
- Check that there are no cracks or loose parts in the housing
- Check that all cables are free or cracks, cuts, or broken wires
By running this monthly check on your AEDs, you are ensuring that all of your units are rescue ready, because when a Sudden Cardiac Arrest emergency arises, being prepared with all of your emergency equipment and proper CPR training for your employees is crucial.
